Sibonyeun surprise Muangwak in top tier Sawasdee tournament

CMSCA & Lamphun cricket Sawasdee mini tournament of 4 teams, the top tier of Lamphun teams participated in this event, the hosts Muangkwak, Ban Jam, Sibonyeun and Anubanmuanglamphun. The winners were Sibonyeun who lost to Muangkwak by 20 runs in the final game, but won the tournament by a 2 runs on a overall run accumulative difference.

The 3rd Lamphun sawasdee junior cricket competition of the season was a 4 team event, with the top teams from Lamphun competing in a mini tournament at Muangkwak School sponsored by Driessen – Zodiac Aerospace. Pre-match favourites had to be Muangkwak but sadly 2 of the girls, Dao and Aree had already gone back home leaving a big gap in their team and it showed when they lost the first game to Ban Jam, although the team played well in the next 2 games the damage was already done.

Ban Jam despite winning that important first game never really looked confident of winning the tournament. In their first game, Sibonyeun played very well and comfortably beating Anubanmuanglamphun, however, the 5th graders of Anuban played some good cricket, despite being soundly beaten in all their games, there were signs that they could be one of the the teams to look out for next season.

At times the quality shown by all teams was very good, bowling was tight and were saw some great shots by the experienced Sawasdee cricket batters, Nok and Naporn of Muangkwak and Mick and Ga of Sibonyeun. The Ban Jam team lost to the Sibonyeun team by 34 in a very disappointing game for them, star player Dik didn’t bowl or bat well and that reflected in the score. But it was the final game of the day that got the attention, Muangkwak v Sibonyeun, Sibonyeun unbeaten and looking to win the tournament outright but were well and truly beaten by a Muangkwak team showing their full potential, they scored a match winning 297 and then produced a fine bowling display, unfortunately New, one of the inexperienced girls who had come in for Dao had 28 hit from her over by the clever batting from Min and Ankor, who hit the short boundary with consecutive 4’s and 6’s thus allowing Sibonyeun to accumulate 277, which still resulted in a comprehensive win for Muangkwak but it wasn’t enough to win the competition.

Three teams, Sibonyeun, Muangkwak and Ban Jam all finished on 9 points but Sibonyeun won by accumulative run difference of just 2, leaving Muangkwak in second and Ban Jam third, but a really exciting game to end the tournament. So a disappointing competition for the mostly girls team from Muangkwak and Ban Jam who were hoping to do better but jubilation for Sibonyeun, its now onto Mae On on the 11th March for the Chiang Mai Sixes tournament to finish off the season and to say goodbye to many of the grade 6 players who will be hopefully moving on to hardball cricket next term.
