Lamma CC's tour to Chiang Mai was brought to a close on Sunday afternoon at Gymkhana as the tourists were involved in a three-team tournament along with Lanna's two sides. Lamma came off second best in both their matches but played their part in a fantastic contest against Lanna Thais.
Lamma made 115 for 7 in their 12-overs with Richard Abbott making 20 and Leng and Chatree both taking two wickets as a penalty of three runs for a wide helped to bolster the total. The Lanna Thais team was made up of two seniors Elliot Lodge and Martin Cardno along with nine Thai juniors, so the chase was going to be a tough one with retirements required at 30.
Cardno did his bit with 33 from 16 balls but Lodge had dropped himself down the order so the Thai boys would have to make a contribution with the bat. Never fear when Chaiwut is here, as he relished being promoted to number three as he hit 31 from 22 balls. He had always impressed with the ball but had been reticent about his batting, so this could be a breakthrough innings for him as his talent shone through particularly when he hit a six onto the Match Box roof.
Young Leng did well to make seven runs alongside the captain who is building a reputation for hitting the winning runs in difficult chases and this time he hit a boundary from the last ball to take Lanna Thais to a thrilling victory by six wickets. He and his young team proudly held up the Lamma flag to celebrate their victory.
Lanna, fielding a team captained by Burhan and featuring several of his All Stars, won the competition by winning both their matches by a convincing margin, with Lanna Thais finishing second and an exhausted Lamma team coming third.
Many thanks must go to Lamma for all their efforts on and off the field and for ensuring that the bar has made a healthy profit that can be put towards junior cricket in the future. All at Lanna hope that this tour can become a regular feature of the cricket calendar in Chiang Mai.
